How To Sharpen Drill Bits

Drill bit is a tool that is used to cut and generate cylindrical hole. Drill bits are combination of drill and bit, drill is the electric machine to which bits are attached and bit is used to create hole of different size and shape. Bits are rotated with the help of drill at very high speed and by applying some force hole can be created. Using right type of bits at right places is important thing to follow to keep the edges sharp for long time. Drill bits require proper maintenance for better performance. Bits should be handled carefully to save the edges and tips from getting hampered. Performance of these bits depend on their sharpness, sharper edges will perform better. Many people don't know how to sharpen drill bits by themselves.

How To Sharpen Drill Bits

How to sharpen drill bits? Bits are sharpened with the help electronic bench grinder which has wheel made of diamond or carbon. Diamond being harder than carbon last longer and also sharpens effectively.  Grinders can sharpen all types of bits made from different materials. The first thing before you begin to sharpen the bits is to wear an eye protection. Then start the grinder keeping it in low speed and hold the smooth end of the bit from your hand or with pliers. There are two areas in a bit: tip and ridges. The main work of tip is to penetrate deeper and deeper and ridges cut that are in cylindrical form. Another important thing is that if the bit is bigger than it can be sharpened more number of times.

Then place the tip of bit on grinding wheel at certain angle to give it a conical shape and apply little pressure. Keep rotating the bit slowly so that shape of the cone is constant. Also keep checking sharpness by removing it from time to time. Always remember to keep bit at certain angle because if kept flat, it might become of no use. Examine the sharpness with your fingers. Don't apply to much pressure on thinner bits as their tip might break. Sharpening the bit is easy task but it also requires utmost care.
